Volunteering Experience
Farming
The volunteering experience usually is set up to work on a farm, at a school or on a community project. Volunteers live with a local family that provide a room, meals, laundry and cleaning service. This really allows for full cultural immersion. However, if volunteers prefer to live on their own, we can coordinate an alternative living situation that they desire.
Living and working on a farm is so rewarding and educational. It is also HARD work. No worries, you can do as much or as little as makes you comfortable. You will be living alongside jungle farming families and they are very proud to show you how they live, they are also very appreciative you have come to help. Spanish is not necessary, everyone makes due and gets through just fine. However, plan on leaving with a new Spanish vocabulary!
Teaching and Community Work
Depending on how much time you have to spend in Sarapiqui, and how much lead-time you have to plan, working at a local school and helping out teachers, especially English teachers, will undoubtedly fill a very huge gap in this area. Send us an email and tell us how you think you can help and we can go from there.
Other projects can be assisting in organizing local committees, help a committee apply for a grant, participate in planning and executing fundraising events, build something for the community WITH the community.
Let us know your level of Spanish, your skills and your desires and we will match you up. Spanish is always necessary but for specific projects it can be crucial.
